Dewinterising the garden

I had a phone call from the travel agent yesterday. P&O had changed their mind about allowing more children on an early January 2010 voyage out of Fremantle. We could embark with them if we wished. That’s what they said the first time we booked with them and then cancelled the cruise. There was no way they were going to take us and our money on an alternative unfilled cruise in early January. They already had their quota for kids. Furthermore they took ages to refund our original deposit and never answered our attempts at email communication. Then there has been the matter of giant tsunamis and Moslem terrorists targeting Australian tourists in Indonesia, plus the increasing prospect of such cruises being diverted to ‘rescue’ boatloads of demanding Sri Lankan Tamils trying to smuggle themselves to Australia. So my answer was thanks, but no thanks. Besides, we’ve since paid for a couple of weeks at Rottnest Island.

Yesterday we started dewinterising our back garden. This translates as weeding the brick paving. We don’t spray herbicides so there is a good selection of weeds this year to be hacked, slashed and pulled. I’m raring to get back into the task today. I’m very pleased to report that our three daughters have been helping us.

When I counted the pomegranate flowers yesterday one was missing. It was lying on the ground. I’m guessing some clumsy bird knocked it off. Darn.

At Garden Week in April 2007 we spent twenty bucks on a clematis. It has struggled ever since. The spindly creeper had a single flower last year and rewarded us with a second this week. It’s huge and beautiful. Here’s a picture of it:

Check out each month's subject index on the Calendar Page for my "common-man" monologues about survival in 21st century Australia – plus a little history occasionally.  An original essay is added most days as part of an undertaking to write at least couple of million words. Zzzzzzzz!

Yes it was pretty special. The next day the mauve colour intensified, and then by the following morning all the petals had dropped off. I collected them for my daughter to press.
