Good garden news

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been watching the first pomegranate flower-buds develop on the plant I espaliered two years ago. Yesterday the first flower advertised for business. The word soon got around in the insect world, as can be seen in the pics below. I’m expecting visitor activity to increase when the pollen anthers reveal their contents, possibly today. Pomegranates can cross or self-pollinate so I’m optimistic some fruit will set. And how exotic was the flower colour? The orange was so intense that I think the camera was confused.

Another bit of garden excitement is that we’ve had our first crop of West Indian limes. They’ve ripened and gone past the green-skin stage to yellow like a lemon, but the lime-juice flavor is still distinctive. We had about 20 fruit from the tree this year. In the past I’ve shown ripe orange coloured limes from a different tree in our garden. These pics were taken this morning. Both trees have just set plenty of new fruit for next year.

We were a bit concerned yesterday morning for the whereabouts of our recent guest, Bobby the Bobtail. My youngest daughter and I searched under all the bushes in the new enclosure without success, but when the mid morning sun came out, so did he. That’s the way it should be.
