Milly the wonder dog is on the mend

We were supposed to pick our cocker spaniel pup Milly up from the local vet at 4 pm yesterday afternoon, but we had a phone call about three saying it would be two hours later. Her desexing operation didn't take place 'till midday and she was a bit too sleepy to release.

She was still pretty dozy when we collected her at six. I was feeling a bit faint myself as my wife paid the bill for $344.45. Apart from the surgery, the charge included a ID microchip - $55; an injection which will protect her from the mosquito born heartworm for a year - $62.25; a plastic head-cone to prevent her examining her sutures - $10; and a three month dose of a flea-stopping vermicide - $7.20. I guess the charges were not too bad. Vets have to eat too.

Our cats were quite interested in Milly when she came home. I think they were trying to tell her a few jokes to cheer her up, but she wasn't in the mood. She slept quite well during the night in our bedroom, apart from some prolonged whimpering from 1am. This morning she's feeling pretty good. She's already gotten used to the cone on her head. It'll be there for the next week at least, and maybe until the sutures come out after ten days.

In the meantime I've started the search for a Frisbee - a genuine one, not a lightweight Chinese imitation. I've resolved to teach Milly to catch one in mid-flight after the stitches come out. I've learned how to do it from the internet. I'm going to turn our pup into a wonder dog - perhaps. Then again...

Check out each month's subject index on the Calendar Page for my "common-man" monologues about survival in 21st century Australia – plus a little history occasionally. An original essay is added most days as part of an undertaking to write at least couple of million words. Zzzzzzzz!
